9 Improvements Needed For A Successful Assassin's Creed Sequel

4. Fix The Wayward Tone

The Problem

The tone of the Assassin's Creed movie is a mixed bag and often bewildering. Much of the film is extremely serious and downright dull. The characters (and actors/actresses) seem to lack passion and motivation for what is occurring, driven merely by the plot they are following rather than a desire to accomplish their goals.

However, there appears to be some attempt to kerb the misery but it fails remarkably. In several scenes, Lynch is portrayed as unhinged and wacky. He screams maniacally when forced into the Animus and seems to mock his surroundings in a, somewhat meta, cafeteria exposition scene when he exclaims 'what the f**k is going on here?'

Early on in the film, there is a scene where Lynch comically stumbles through the Abstergo facility, and frankly, it's unclear if this is intended as comic relief or is just Fassbender hamming up his physical acting. These quirky scenes seem completely out of place with rest of the film and turn a tedious film into a bit of a tonal mess.

The Solution

Whilst the filmmakers may have had the right idea in breaking up the slower moments in the film with some humour, it is poorly executed. A sequel should take a step away from the dreary tone but avoid any offbeat elements. A less serious tone that promotes the enjoyment, camaraderie and exhilaration Lynch/Aguilar feels from being an Assassin, rather than just a mindless hitman, would greatly endear him and the rest of the characters to the audience.
