9 Insane Ways Oscar Winners Trained For Movie Blockbusters

Ben Affleck was 41 years old when principal photography on Batman v Superman began in the summer of 2014, barely a year after Affleck scooped a Best Picture Oscar for his work on hit thriller Argo.

After establishing himself as a prestige filmmaker, Affleck opted to get back into superhero duds for the first time since the infamous 2003 flop Daredevil, and his new workout regime had to accommodate the fact he wasn't a young man anymore.

To achieve the stockier Batman seen in the final film, Affleck teamed with longtime trainer Walter Norton Jr., who helped him target specific muscle areas and go from 208 pounds to 231 pounds with an insane 7.7 percent body fat. With some adjustments, he settled back down to 225 pounds for the shoot.

Because the Batsuit alone weighs a ridiculous 75 pounds, there was a distinct focus on weight training. "We wanted him to be strong but we wanted to add mass...We lived on a lot of the basics, 80-pound dumbbell curls, heavy-loaded carries, and farmers walks with 60-pound weights."

Was It Worth It?: This is a tough one. Affleck certainly looked the part as a gruff, world-weary Bruce Wayne and by far the most physically imposing Batman yet, yet the film - and its follow-up, Justice League - aren't exactly quality pictures, earning him a fair share of derision online.

But on the flip side, he clearly earned massive pay packets for both movies, so regardless of whether he exits the DCEU soon or not, he's made mad bank and served as a respectable - if wildly underused - Caped Crusader.
