9 More Actors Who Just Gave Their Worst Performance Ever
3. David Duchovny - You People
With the weight of the world's money behind it, Netflix has presided over a raft of sensational films over the past decade, but it has also introduced us to some absolute shockers.
Despite having Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy on board, You People is of the latter category. The basic premise is geeky white Jewish guy (Hill) falls in love with a hip black woman and the ensuing cultural clash that occurs via her overbearing father (Murphy). Somehow director Kenya Barris manages to bungle this premise and everyone comes out of it worse for wear, with You People's depiction of Jewish characters coming in for heavy criticism following its release.
Murphy and Hill have had plenty of career duds to rival this, but the film's stand-out bad performance is David Duchovny, simply because it's the worst he's turned in yet. The usually humorous and charismatic actor struggles with a straightforward embarrassing dad part, supposedly representing white, Boomer Judaism in a way that never lands.
Again, as is so often the case, the weakness of the dialogue and script in general do a lot of harm here, but an old hand like Duchovny would have been able to work through it better than this.
