9 Movies That Completely Misunderstood Their Own Characters

4. Independence Day: Resurgence

Jeff Goldblum Independence Day Resurgence
20th Century Fox

The Character - David Levinson

The archetypal nerd who urges the president to listen to his theories on the ominous alien signal he finds in Independence Day. He's scard of flying - which is key - is not a man you'd consider to ever be on the front-line in a fight - which is key - and he seems to find the idea of heroism somewhat vulgar. Also key.

But In THIS Movie

Who knows what happened in the two decades between his appearances but David goes from nerdy science guy to SyFy movie action lead. H's as far removed from the lovable loser he is in the first movie as you could possibly imagine, and his charm suffers badly as a result. Sure, he's still Jeff Goldblum, but it's like h's getting Goldblum all wrong.

The worst part of it is that this new swashbuckling evolution of the character is also a massive idiot, as if the lack of intelligence in the script required him to simply get stupider to acclimatise to it.
