9 Reasons Why Justice League Is Now Officially The Lowest-Grossing DCEU Film
4. The Director Switch-Up
Making the switch from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon mid-way through the editing process was a bold move on DC's part and one that looks increasingly like a last-ditch effort to dump Snyder from the project.
Depending on who you ask, this either saved the film from being entirely unwatchable or ruined the visionary conclusion to an auteur's trilogy. Regardless, its safe to say that the end result is a Frankenstein's monster of a film. Its tone is all over the place and actor's haircuts/physical appearances can and do vary wildly from one shot to the next.
Whereas BvS had its fair share of defenders and fans, this switch-up made even them turn on the film for ruining Snyder's vision. But WB also issued a mandate that the film be cut down to a two-hour maximum runtime so as to recoup as much of their losses as possible by theaters being able to show it more times per day, so even Whedon was reportedly unhappy with the final cut.
Thus, to summarize, no one was happy with the final product. Snyder and his fans felt as though it had been bastardized, Whedon and his fans felt there was no salvaging the project. It is a compromise that pleases no one.
