9 Remakes That Were More Influential Than The Original

5. The Ring

The Japanese version of The Ring is one creepy slow burn of a movie, which follows a reporter trying to solve the mystery behind a killer video before it kills her too. The movie is infamous for the TV scare, and making slow moving girls with long dark hair the scariest thing ever.

The film became a cult hit, but it wasn’t until Hollywood ported it over that The Ring became a worldwide smash. The Naomi Watts starring thriller beefed up the jump scares and gave a more complicated origin story for the villain, but it was better than it had any right to be; something the sequel couldn’t be accused of.

The Ring kicked off the whole j-horror remake wave that swept Hollywood for a bit, with everything from The Grudge to One Missed Call getting a new coat of paint. Even video games like F.E.A.R and Deadly Premonition took cues from it. The trend died out for a bit, but with Rings 3D and a remake of Audition on the way, the influence of The Ring is still being felt.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
