9 Upcoming Movies That Are Unofficial Remakes

5. Stuber = Taxi

Stuber Taxi 1998
Disney & Lionsgate

Stuber follows an unassuming Uber driver, Stu (Kumail Nanjiani), who picks up a no-nonsense detective (Dave Bautista) and ends up chauffeuring him around the city as he chases down criminals, all in the hope of maintaining his high customer service rating.

It's a premise shamelessly lifted from the 1998 Luc Besson-scripted French hit Taxi, where a cab driver agrees to drive a goofball police officer around town as he pursues a gang of German robbers in a desperate attempt to restore his tarnished reputation.

Taxi was in fact given the official Hollywood remake treatment back in 2004 with the universally-panned film starring Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon, though shifting the ride of choice to an Uber here rather than a taxi does at least make the "inspiration" less blatant.

Still, between the marketing and the early reviews from SXSW, it sure sounds like it hits the same broad, action-packed beats.
