9 Ways X-Men: Apocalypse Is The Most Frustrating Comic Book Movie Of The Year

6. It Spoils The Character Of Professor X

If you thought Dawn Of Justice messed up the character of Superman - turning him in a broody, humourless git - wait till you see Professor X in Apocalypse.

Remember the romantic subplot between Xavier and Moira MacTaggert in First Class? It wasn’t anything major, just a little bit of romantic tension that got wrapped up when he wiped her memory at the end. Well, turns out that brief encounter was the love of his life since he pursues Moira like a love sick puppy this time.

For whatever dumb reason the filmmakers have turned Professor X into an awkward dork, and while McAvoy does his best it’s an odd development for the character. It doesn’t help that Moira has no function aside from this subplot, and the chemistry between them is lukewarm at best; they both look remarkably youthful for people in their early fifties, however.

Even more frustratingly he could have redeemed himself in his psychic battle with Apocalypse, where we finally get to see him throw some punches; it’s not long before he gets his smacked around again, though. He was never the hippest character to start with, but hopefully, this ultra dweeby version doesn’t carry over to the next adventure.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
