A History of Horribly Haunted Objects in Horror Films

The EVIL VHS Tape

Sadly, this format didn€™t last long enough for the whole possession angle to really take off. No one bothered making a haunted laser disc or beta tape because both of those technologies had shaky futures. Similarly, by the time the sequel to The Ring came out, the only way to justify someone even watching a VHS was if the character had a duel VHS/DVD player. Evil has become obsolete. This is the danger of investing your villain in a contemporary technology, and why we haven€™t already been bombarded with terrifying stories of haunted Ipads. Don€™t worry, it took cellphones a while too, just give it time. That being said, The Ring is sort of an anomaly in the simple fact that it€™s able to transcend its story trappings and remain a truly frightening film. Sadly though, unless Samara€™s maniacal spirit discovers youtube, her evil tape will just sit in someone€™s basement collecting dust. She really should have thought about recording her evil essence in HD.

I have a keen, almost obsessive fascination with the macabre. It has lead me from a quiet life growing up in a small town to where I am now; creating horrific works about horrific things in many different mediums including films, short stories and essays. I live life by a simple motto: learn to like the dark, cause eventually, it'll come for all of us (lightening flashes and thunder claps)... but it ain't so bad.
