After the rather muted response to Prometheus, which tried something new but didn't fully deliver, it's clear that Covenant is taking the franchise back to its roots, with a blend of horror and action. The look and feel of the trailer clearly invokes the original movie, from the scenes with the crew to the backbuster to Waterston's Daniels being 'the new Ripley'.

We've seen a couple of legacy-quels in the last couple of years serve as a sort-of remake of the original - The Force Awakens and Creed being the two best examples - so that could be what we're seeing here. It's not necessarily a bad thing (both those aforementioned films are great) so long as there's enough differences and new additions that it's not just a complete re-tread. It's a fine balancing act though, and it'll be interesting to see how Covenant handles it.
