Despite the continuous preaching of cinematic acolytes like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and even Christopher Nolan, the theater-going movie experience is slowly becoming something of an endangered species.

As a result, modern blockbusters ranging from MCU films to even artier big-budget films like Darren Aronofsky's Noah are being made and engineered in editing specifically with the thought of playing well on smaller screens in mind. They are making choices specifically engineered to ensure technical aspects such as the aspect ratio plays well on Blu-ray, laptops, and even cell phone for home viewing.

Alita: Battle Angel is decidedly not that. It is a big old, swing for the fences, see-it-in-theaters-or-bust kind of movie. It will play horribly on a cell phone because it has been specifically engineered with the biggest screens imaginable in mind.

The film flexes the IMAX 3D format's muscles to an extent they simply haven't been pushed before. In many ways, it is reminiscent of James Cameron's own Avatar in this regard and a sequel would surely see Rodriguez and Cameron delivering another huge cinematic experience, which is an increasingly rare thing these days.
