Andrew Garfield Seems Happy He's No Longer Spider-Man
The actor won't miss the web-slinging.
Earlier this week Marvel tickled our anticipatory-buds with a shot of Tom Holland in action on the set of Captain America: Civil War as the third cinematic iteration of Spider-Man. For that movie at least, it looks like the character will be adopting a more aesthetically grass-roots approach to fighting crime, which marks a nice change of pace. His immediate predecessor also seems down with the situation. Talking to ET Online, Andrew Garfield had the following to say about Spidey and his thoughts concerning Holland:
"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor...Im just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it,"That's a lovely, professional way to address what's essentially a job loss. So good on you Andrew. It's interesting to hear Garfield describe the highest-profile role of his career as a "weight". Yes, big budget movies are tough to make and place extreme strain on the talent, but when someone describes their job as a "weight", that's not a good sign. Garfield's a pretty intense performer, and before he was Spider-Man the actor was known for work on stage and in more prestigious fare like Fincher's The Social Network. Maybe he found the creative perimeters of blockbuster film-making stifling, or the level of fan expectation that comes with depicting a superhero crushing. Either way, he seems totally at ease to be done with it. Of course there's also the fact The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a hot mess of a production, but Garfield seems much too gentlemanly to rail against a specific professional experience. If he's happy, we're happy. Let's leave it at that. Captain America: Civil War hits UK cinemas on 29th April, 2016 and in the US a week later on 6th May, 2016.
