Ant Man & The Wasp Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To See

7. The Plot Is Often Messy & Convoluted

"Peyton Reed, who directed the first Ant-Man, returns for the sequel, and he and the film’s five credited screenwriters (including Rudd) have crafted an overly busy, sometimes convoluted story that juggles a few subplots and several significant antagonists." - Screen Daily
"The filmmakers are so cavalier about the idea that any of this is supposed to make any sense that there's a certain liberation in not burdening two human-brained insects with the fate of the entire universe." - Hollywood Reporter
"So begins a rollicking odyssey that starts as a rescue mission and dovetails into a convoluted crime story." - IndieWire

Though the script seems to favour laughs and gags over much of a nuanced narrative, the plot that does exist is apparently a bit sloppy. Many critics however mostly hand-waived this given the little importance the plot actually has in terms of the overall experience.

If you're (for some reason) looking for a meaningful story out of an Ant-Man movie, you might be a little disappointed here. The words "convoluted" and "contrived" come up a lot in the early reviews, suggesting the script simultaneously tries too hard and not quite hard enough in different areas.
