Ant Man & The Wasp Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To See
5. The Villains Will Divide Audiences
"Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) is an intriguing deconstruction of a typical comic book villain there’s a lot left unexplored, which results in her feeling one-dimensional despite Kamen’s best efforts...It’s Walton Goggins’ slimy Sonny Burch who feels the most superfluous -- the actor’s got charisma to spare, but Sonny seems to exist solely to create roadblocks whenever our heroes look like they might complete their mission too easily, without the script ever really justifying his presence." - IGN
"'Ant-Man and the Wasp' loses momentum as it mucks up the plot with Walton Goggins as a two-bit criminal intent on stealing Hank Pym’s shrunken lab; it also struggles to make a new supervillain, the enigmatic Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), into a compelling character." - IndieWire
"And although Marvel hasn’t always done a terrific job in fashioning nuanced villains, John-Kamen gives Ghost a soul, revealing the inner pain which is motivating her actions." - Screen Daily
Sadly, Ant-Man and the Wasp does appear to fall prey to the much-discussed "Marvel villain problem", with focal villains Ghost and Sonny Burch both receiving mixed notices.
Some praised Hannah John-Kamen's performance as Ghost and the unexpectedly muddy nature of her motives, but overall many felt that she wasn't developed enough to be truly interesting.
Walton Goggins was meanwhile largely deemed wasted as Burch, a villain who hangs around the periphery but seemingly could've been cut from the movie entirely without much fuss.
With Infinity War serving up one of the MCU's best antagonists to date, it's a shame to hear this movie returning to the series' prior pattern of mediocre villainy.
