The same year Banderas was turning heads as El Mariachi in Robert Rodriguez's sequel, Desperado, he also played opposite Sylvester Stallone in a far less nuanced film as a sociopathic villain looking to take Stallone out and become top dog.

It's not particularly terrible casting, as Banderas usually has the charisma to carry off such a pantomime performance, but the script is barely worth the paper it was scrawled upon. As a result, Banderas comes across as a cartoon, having to try and inject some life into the film as Stallone barely raises his eyebrows to show signs of life.

Somewhat unfortunately, Banderas' commitment to the role ends up reflecting badly on him: he might be enthusiastic, but you get the feeling he might have emerged a little more positively if he'd shown the material as much disdain as it was due.
