1. More Enemies? More Fun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW2Q0W2V4q0 Commando is an action film so absurd that it basically borders on self-parody, as though it's mocking the video game-like nature of shoot 'em up set-pieces. If films like The Terminator and Terminator 2 had more plausible, straight-faced - not to mention downright brilliant - stand-offs against masses of police officers and SWAT team members, Commando took it in an entirely different direction. The first scene of mass brawling occurs when Arnie's John Matrix is chasing Sully through a mall complex, and finds himself assailed by apparently every mall cop on the West Coast. The best moments include Arnie being piled on by most of them, before breaking out and flinging them all over the place, as well as when he uses some mall bunting to swing across the mall like Tarzan. The film's best scene of Arnie vs. Everyone occurs late in the day when he arrives at a secluded island to save his daughter and kill Bennett. Matrix lets rip with machine guns, rocket launchers and claymore mines, killing likely hundreds of anonymous soldiers with terrible aim, all while he uses rose bushes for cover and lets the bullets glide past his perfectly-oiled bod. The first rule of any action film? The more bad guys, the better. Arnie eats these guys for breakfast, and it's ludicrously entertaining. What are your favourite Arnie tropes? And what did you make of The Last Stand? Let us know in the comments below.
