8. Luke Cage

Who Is He? Born as Carl Lucas, Cage was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Whilst in prison, he volunteered to be the subject of an experiment that would see him injected with a serum designed to replicate the one that gave Captain America his super-soldier abilities and grant immunity to all diseases. What it actually gave him was skin as hard as steel and denser, heavier muscle. He escaped prison, became a "hero" for hire and ended up joining forces with the likes of Iron Fist, the Thunderbolts and the Avengers. Why He'll Be Missed Cage is present right at the beginning of the comic book arc, when he is seen as part of a group taking refuge in an underground base beneath Central Park in New York. When the group learns that Ultron is taking sacrifices in exchange for his mercy (they learnt this when a group of villains tried to offer Spider-Man to him), Luke Cage volunteers to enter Ultron's fortress with She-Hulk - under the ruse that he is delivering her as a sacrifice - in order to infiltrate the robot's defences and find out more about his plans. They uncover the key plot element that Ultron is using Vision as a conduit and is punishing mankind from the future.
