6. Why Hulk Didn't Appear

When the trailers for Infinity War came out, it looked certain that we were going to see Hulk busting some heads in Wakanda as he was shown running behind Captain America towards the Outrider army in one segment. On top of that, a toy line seemed to suggest he was going to burst out of the Hulkbuster armour when Bruce Banner was overrun by the enemies.

In reality, Thor saved the day when the Hulkbuster went down and there was no such shot of Hulk running in the final movie. He didn't appear at all after the first act as Banner had performance issues after the big guy took a beating from Thanos and seemed to get shy.

Joe Russo has once more explained in a recent Q&A with NPR’s Linda Holmes at George Washington University (via Fansided) why we didn't get to see Hulk:

“We have to be careful with the character of Banner. Because if every time he’s in trouble Hulk saves him, Hulk becomes the hero and he becomes whiny. We wanted to force Banner to be the hero.”

He also went a little further to talk about Hulk's feelings to the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared. I mean, certainly, that’s not a — I don’t know that the Hulk is ever… he’s had his ass kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from Ragnarok. Is that these two characters are constantly in conflict with each other over control. And I think that if the Hulk were to say why, it’d be [that] Banner only wants Hulk for fighting. I think he’s had enough of saving Banner’s ass.

In essence, Hulk refuses to be a booty call. Good on him.
