17. It's Agent Coulson

The Theory

According to one theory posted on ComicBook.com, the Soul Stone might confusingly be former dead guy Agent Coulson, whose noble sacrifice in The Avengers turned him into something more than just a dorky agent with a fanboy crush on Captain America:

"The idea is more of a thematic one than one based on hard evidence. Throughout Marvel’s first phase and into Marvel’s The Avengers, where Coulson nobly sacrificed himself to galvanize the Avengers, Coulson was the heart and - wait for it - the soul of the Avengers. Perhaps that role was a literal one as well."

Response

It's tenuous at best and absolutely ridiculous at worst. The theory post itself talks about how improbable it would be given Coulson's role and past adventures in Agent Of SHIELD, as well as the unprecedented idea of a living creature being an Infinity Stone.

And while it's nice to think of Coulson back with the Avengers, there's just no way he'll buck the trend of Marvel keeping their shows and movies completely separate.
