BAFTAs 2021: 8 Ups & 7 Downs
3. Saint Maud Gets Shut Out
One of the most widely-acclaimed films in BAFTA contention this year is the masterful horror film Saint Maud, which was up for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, while lead actress Morfydd Clark was also nominated for the Rising Star Award.
But sadly the film went home totally empty-handed, losing Outstanding British Film to Promising Young Woman, and being pipped to Outstanding Debut by Remi Weekes' His House, while the Rising Star Award went to Rocks' Bukky Bakray instead.
Though not to take anything away from the winners in each of those categories, horror is such a criminally underserved genre in the awards sphere, and Saint Maud is such a uniquely outstanding effort that it's a shame to see it receive nothing whatsoever.
And that's without getting into the fact that Morfydd Clark was snubbed for a Best Actress nomination altogether.
