BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD trailer

Before Christopher Nolan came along and changed the benchmark forever, the best cinematic stories involving Batman were from the animation department of Warner Bros. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and the macabre Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker were as good as it got for a 12 year period of Bat-fans looking for deeper themes than any of the bloated Joel Schmaucher movies that we were being served up.

Today, in a post-Nolan world, of course I still have time for the animated scene. WB/DC's eighth direct-to-video animated film in four years with Batman: Under the Red Hood (July 27th), an adaptation of the classic stories "Under the Hood" and "A Death in the Family" will be a dark tale of betrayal, regret and revenge told in an animated kid friendly PG form and featuring the voice talents of Bruce Greenwood (Batman), Jensen Ackles (Red Hood) and John DiMaggio (Joker). How could I not be on board for this?
