Batman V Superman: 10 Reasons It's Not As Bad As The Critics Are Saying

4. A Self-Loathing Superhero Film? No Way!

One common misconception amongst critics seems to be that Zack Snyder has rendered a self-hating superhero film - that he has made a superhero blockbuster that would rather be anything other than what it's supposed to be.

But this criticism misses the point entirely: Snyder loves superheroes and he loves the iconic characters at the core of his movie; what he tries - and mostly fails - to do is take a closer look at the inner turmoil these superheroes face in their roles as protectors of humankind. He wants to get inside their heads and see what makes them tick.

The fact that Snyder doesn't really succeed in this goal and fails to create anything interesting out of it doesn't mean he set out to make a self-loathing film, though - the super-powered characters here don't hate themselves because they're superheroes, they're just struggling to do what is right (as anyone would) under the complex circumstances.

It could have been better-realised, but to call the film "self-loathing" is just inaccurate.
