20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

13. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Sony Pictures Releasing

Though 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was produced for a relatively modest $63 million and was the follow-up to the commercially successful 28 Years Later, it ended up catastrophically underperforming, grossing just $58.5 million worldwide - barely one-third of 28 Years Later's $151.3 million haul six months prior.

Frustrating though it was to see the sequel flop and in turn put a potential third film in doubt, it was at least easy to see why the sequel dropped off a cliff.

The previous film's ending - a tonally jarring introduction to Jack O'Connell's new villain Jimmy Crystal - left more casual viewers scratching their heads and seemingly unsure if they wanted to revisit this world at all.

Between this, mediocre marketing, and the misguided decision to release The Bone Temple just six months later - rather than giving audiences a little more time to marinate on the previous film - it's clear that Sony didn't put enough thought into how this sequel was rolled out to audiences.
