Bond 24: 15 Locations That 007 Should Visit Next

9. Machu Picchu, Peru

Last Visited: Never Other films shot there: The Motorcycle Diaries Highlight: Though the city is itself the landmark, the highlight would be the mountain Huayna Picchu Why? This is a glaring omission in Bond's cinematic canon. One would think Bond would take in this iconic, picture-postcard landmark! He's visited Rio, The Amazon and Bolivia, and yet never Historic Peru? This is one location Bond really should visit soon. After all, for a man who lives life on the edge and close to death, he should certainly tick this one off his bucket list. The city itself would provide both a visually gorgeous setting and despite the constant stream of tourism not everyone can go there. Bond used to be a pull for audiences because he'd travel to far-off exotic lands. Now that the world seems a lot smaller with affordable air travel, Machu Picchu is still somewhere that would impress audiences if the production crew find something interesting to do in that space besides made it look nice. And to get there wouldn't necessarily be easy- Peru recently overtook Bolivia as the Cocaine capital of the World. It's developed, sure, but a very dangerous place. Kidnappings can occur. Terrorism. Gang activity. Murders. Peru is no walk in the park, and no less dangerous than most Latin American countries. If Bond is to go to Peru, then Mendes et al should at least try and exploit the dangers of the region. Likelihood (out of 5): 3

8. Mogadishu, Somalia

Last Visited: Never Other films shot there: Only documentaries and news reports Highlight: Without doubt the Bakaara Market. Although visiting the Shanghai Old City- virtually destroyed, abandoned and run by warlords- would certainly be an experience. Why? Another location similar to the Helmand Province. Everyone's seen Black Hawk Down- Mogadishu is without doubt one of the most dangerous places in the world. And that is exactly why Bond should go- he's the world's greatest spy, so visiting this particular city would truly test his mettle. If Quantum returns, hiding in the shadows, it's not too difficult to imagine that they have some sort of operation running out of this vicious warzone. There's famously one (almost) guaranteed safe spot in the city- the Peace Hotel. It seems likely Bond would base himself here and rendezvousing with contacts before donning body armour and stepping out into the city for whatever purpose. If the world has gotten smaller and exotic places are less likely to thrill an audience, then by taking Bond to a place they'd never dare go, the audiences will certain have their heart in their mouth. Bond has rarely visited Africa- Madagascar in Casino Royale, Egypt in the Spy Who Loved Me and Morocco in The Living Daylights- and what with it being one of the world's emerging economies, and a place struggling to be rid of its 'third world' status whilst retaining its identity, it's a fascinating continent that Bond of all people- a remnant of Empirical British arrogance who manages to remain relevant to whatever time he is in- should visit more often to combat terrorism and conflict.
