Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
Ups...
7. It's 2020's Most Topical Film
There is surely no film likely to be released for the rest of 2020 which has its finger so firmly on the pulse of the current global mood.
On one hand, much of the film is centered around Cohen trolling the Trump administration, effectively serving as a not-so-subtle and totally irreverent campaign ad for Joe Biden, even urging viewers to get to the polls during its end credits sequence.
On the flip side, Borat 2 was also mostly shot and produced in the midst of the current pandemic, and much of the film's narrative is intimately intermingled with the new world order of lockdowns and mask-wearing - or as some of the film's subjects would prefer it, not doing those things.
And while some viewers may prefer not to be reminded of 2020's horrid realities, there is an undeniably soothing, cathartic quality to Cohen aggressively railing against both Trump supporters and COVID-deniers.
