The moment that found footage film Cloverfield exploded at the box office, director Matt Reeves talked up the prospect of a sequel, with his key idea being a second film set on the same night as the first, but taking place from another perspective.

Reeves revealed that he very deliberately included a moment during the Brooklyn Bridge sequence where cameraman Hud (T.J. Miller) can be seen being filmed by somebody else, confirming that there are other perspectives of the alien invasion out there.

This was the impetus for Cloverfield 2, then, and considering the multitude of potential perspectives amid the carnage, the possibilities were basically endless.

But Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams never quite got around to making the film, with Cloverfield instead laying dormant until 2016's spin-off 10 Cloverfield Lane, followed by The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018, both of which ditched the found footage style.

In 2021 a new Cloverfield sequel was announced which is said to be more of a direct follow-up to the original, though with this new film also expected to unfold as a conventional narrative feature, it surely won't pick up Reeves' original sequel concept.
