At the start of 2025, Disney announced that they were developing a "gender-swapped" reboot of Holes, the much-loved young adult novel from Louis Sachar.

The pilot episode was set to be directed by WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer, with Shay Rudolph starring as a new female protagonist, alongside Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant.

However, last December Disney announced that they wouldn't be moving forward with a full series, seeming to suggest that the pilot didn't quite turn out as well as they hoped.

Opinions over the cancellation have been wildly mixed online, some lamenting that this reimagining will never see the light of day all while others surmise that the hit 2003 Shia LaBeouf-starring film has aged exceptionally well and already did a fantastic job of adapting the novel.

While it's highly likely that someone will take another crack at Holes sometime down the line, this particular take is dead and buried.
