20 Upcoming Film & TV Shows That Just Got Cancelled
12. Star Trek 4
You know the state of a film's development is absolutely dire when it gets its own Wikipedia page, and indeed, Paramount has spent the better part of a decade trying to get a fourth entry of the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movies into production.
A big part of the problem is that the third film, Star Trek Beyond, was a box office disappointment, grossing a mediocre $343.5 million against a hefty $180 million budget, far lower than the $467.4 million grossed by Star Trek Into Darkness and even less than the 2009 original's $385.7 million take.
Paramount nevertheless gave it the college try, hoping to make a fourth film with a reduced budget, but after numerous attached directors and drafted scripts, the plug was finally pulled back in November, with the Paramount-Skydance merger apparently being the straw that broke the camel's back.
At this point a Trek reboot was instead announced, with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) now set to write and direct.
It's a sad outcome considering the generally rock solid quality of the three Abrams-produced Trek films, but also way too much time had passed at this point for Star Trek 4 to ever be a hit with audiences.
