Captain America: Civil War - 30 Easter Eggs & References You Must See
21. Spidey's Costume
There's a lot in Spider-Man's costumes that counts as references and Easter Eggs. First off, his homemade outfit that Tony Stark finds stashed in his loft hatch is very much reminiscent of his patched up costumes in the Ultimate Marvel universe. The whole youthful Spidey package seems to have been adapted out from that reference point too.
Then the upgraded suit that Stark develops for him is heavily influenced by Steve Ditko's early artwork, with elements taken from John Romita's version - particularly the chest insignia. The fact that his eyes seem to change shape seems like a gag linked to how many times they've changed over the years on the page.
And then there's the issue of the techy upgrades: this might not be quite as eye-catching a look as the Civil War Iron Spider costume seen in the comics, but the augmentations are definitely in the same vein. The fact that it turns out Tony added developments Parker doesn't even know about also follows that story for anyone aware of the comics. If it turns out he built in monitoring fall-backs, their relationship could well sour as it did in the comics.
