During Paramount's panel for Terminator: Dark Fate, where they dropped a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the film, it was confirmed that not only will the sixth Terminator film be rated R - a first for the series since Terminator 3 - it will also feature the return of one of the franchise's most iconic performers.

James Cameron confirmed that Edward Furlong, who of course played young John Connor in Terminator 2, will be reprising the role in Dark Fate, though didn't elaborate much beyond that.

Despite the obvious fan skepticism surrounding this new movie, it's certainly an interesting new wrinkle, even if it's likely that Furlong's role will be minimal, given the widely-circulated rumour that Connor will actually be dead during the events of the film.

If reports can be believed, Furlong may actually only be contributing a voiceover role to Dark Fate, but as ever, we'll have to wait and see.

Still, it's a neat get for the movie, and given Furlong's extensive issues with both substance abuse and the law, it's a relief to see him back in the fold.

Terminator: Dark Fate releases on November 1.
