Despite being an epic war movie starring Tom Hanks of all people, you probably don't remember Greyhound, which was originally set for a theatrical release in 2020, before the pandemic prompted Sony to sell it to Apple TV+ instead.

The film received politely positive reviews and an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, but simply didn't have much in the way of cultural staying power.

But Greyhound was rather quietly a huge success on streaming, and almost six years on from its release continues to rank highly on both Apple and general VOD charts.

Greyhound was enough of a hit that, by 2025, Apple confirmed production of Greyhound 2, which began shooting back in February and reunited Hanks with original cast members Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue.

The lesson here? Never doubt the power of the Dad Movie to be a huge hit with a demographic that isn't terminally online.
