Danny Boyle: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

5. Shallow Grave (1994)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKrfUAho5as Boyle's feature debut is an absolute corker, blowing me away and making me intrigued to see what else he was capable of right out of the gate. When three friends (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston and Ewan McGregor) find their flatmate dead with a bunch of cash, greed begins to take hold and threatens to tear them apart. It's a fantastic parable about the nature of people that's superbly acted and tripwire-tense from start to finish. Unfortunately, this is one of Boyle's lesser-seen films despite being in his top-half; it's low-budget but girds on a fantastically witty, thrilling script, that keeps you guessing until the darkly funny climax. It's a shame Boyle hasn't made more films like this, because he's damn good at it.
