David Lynch’s 22 Strangest ‘Otherworld’ Characters

13. Glinda The Good Witch: Wild At Heart

€˜If you€™re truly wild at heart, fight for your dreams. Don€™t turn away from love.€™ Although Wild At Heart contains a vast amount of weird and wonderful characters, only one of them feels truly €˜otherworldly€™: Sheryl Lee€™s Glinda The Good Witch. She only appears briefly at the film€™s conclusion, and it is unclear whether she is simply a figment of Sailor€™s (Nicholas Cage) imagination, but she seems to hold a similar role to that of The Grandmother earlier in the list. She is, as her name suggests, a truly €˜good€™ figure that offers Sailor very clear advice about following his dreams and his heart. Her role in the narrative, then, sees her effectively encouraging him to go back to Lula (Laura Dern), granting the audience the happy ending that they desire. This theme €“ a glorious, brightly-lit conclusion in which characters seem to be granted the idyllic, beautiful ending that they desire €“ occurs in many of Lynch€™s films, from Fire Walk With Me to Inland Empire, and the appearance of Glinda The Good Witch embodies this.
