DCEU: Ranking Every Big Fight Scene From Worst To Best
4. Sicily Chase - Aquaman (2018)
James Wan's underwater entry in the DCEU was a surprisingly enjoyable and bonkers example of throwing everything into the kitchen sink and making it work for the most part. It featured crisp visuals, a self-aware and adventurous tone, game performances from its cast and great action set-pieces that took full advantage of Wan's filmmaking sensibilities, the underwater setting and the characters' powers and abilities. These components coalesced into a film that sits on top of the DC film box office mountain.
The film's most memorable setpiece was the rooftop chase in Sicily during Arthur and Mera's search for Atlan's trident. The newly formed Black Manta (with help from Arthur's half-brother Orm and Atlantean soldiers) attack with the intent of capturing Mera and killing Arthur for his negligence in saving Manta's father.
The setpiece is well shot with a keen understanding of spatial geography and excellent use of long shots; particularly Mera's rooftop chase that leads into Arthur's evasion of a massive heat blast from Black Manta. The scene's clear cinematography allows for the choreography and characters' abilities to be on full display for audiences to take in and is a strong example of the film's impressive setpieces.
