Deadpool: 10 Obscure References You Probably Missed
5. The Other Side Of The Shar-Pei Joke
There's a lot of great jabs at Deadpool's pruney appearance throughout the film, and while most of the choice picks come from a clearly ad-libbing T.J. Miller - "an avocado had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado", "Freddy Krueger face-fucked a topographical map of Utah" - the best of them comes from Deadpool himself, who describes himself as looking like he was "bit by a radioactive shar-pei". Now, in my initial easter egg breakdown I commented on how the "bit by a radioactive..." part of that quote was one of several nods to Spider-Man, although there's another side to the gag. In Cable & Deadpool #2 (a comic which, prophetically, came out in 2004), the comic Merc with a Mouth takes a jab at his future actor, describing himself as looking "like Ryan Reynolds crossed with a shar-pei." Reynolds afterwards said this played a big part in him getting curious about playing the role.
