Perhaps surprisingly, one thing the reactions to Deadpool have also noted is that the film has an emotional current to it. The first film, though yes, revolved around a romance, pulled its punches when it came to its most dramatic moments, but at least Deadpool 2 looks to be bringing something more to the table.
Following on from Liefeld's emotional reaction, others were quick to point out that the film was both emotional and dramatic, ensuring that its own irreverent style doesn't detract from the most important beats of the film's narrative.
In any case, it still might prove surprising to fans that Deadpool 2 is getting the reaction it is. The first wasn't exactly an emotional ride, and while there were genuine moments of tragedy, they were offset immediately by a cacophony of gunfire and innuendo.
