The big appeal of hiring David Leitch to take over from Tim Miller was always going to be what he brings to action scenes. The former stuntman has already shown on John Wick and Atomic Blonde that he knows how to make uber-violence look like ballet and he's really pushed the boat out to make a similar sort of impact with Deadpool.

The first film's violence was nowhere near as memorable as what Leitch does and you can see his commitment to using 'Pool's specific powers creatively. It's like he's at John Wick and Atomic Blonde and then explored what it would be like if those heroes weren't just bad-asses but could also take an infinite amount of punishment.

The result is hard-hitting close quarters fighting that makes 'Pool look like a superhero smashed together with Garbage Pail Kids-style gross-out violence. And it's commendable because his healing factor - and the situations it leads to in the comics - is precisely one of the reasons Deadpool is such a popular character. Leitch doesn't just understand action and hyper-violence, he understands their relationship to his main character.
