DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS Or Movie For Schmucks?
I'm not sure what to think about this new trailer for the July comedy 'Dinner For Schmucks' except that it has one of the dumbest central ideas in recent comedic film history. I thought 'Step Brothers' and 'I Love You, Man' had lame, contrived storylines, but this one really stretches the imagination. Do professional office people actually have parties like this? I've never heard of such a thing, nor have I ever been invited to one (must have been an oversight, right?). The premise just sounds extremely hokey. But, like 'I Love You, Man', the premise can be dumb but still work thanks to the talents of the comedians picked to star in it. In this case, Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd are more than capable of elevating the stupid basis for this film and soar on improvisation. Here's the trailer to prove that these guys can even make magic happen with a broken wand: My only complaint about this film (besides the set-up, of course) is that you can smell this film's ending a mile away. POTENTIAL SPOILER Rudd's snobbish character will learn to appreciate Carrell's goofball despite spending the entire film either annoyed by him or mocking him. These types of films feel so mechanical, as if welded together on a conveyor belt. I really miss the days of comedies with more complexity and diversity. Where are films like 'Tootsie' or 'Mr. Mom'? Hell, even 'Kingpin' has a stronger storyline than this. I guess when you have schmucks at the movie theater, you make the stuff schmucks want to see. That's a shame. It'd be nice to see something with a bit more intelligence and cleverness.
