20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)

12. Five Nights at Freddy's

Five Nights At Freddys

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood adapted the hit video game Five Nights at Freddy's into a movie, and while translating the game's messy lore into a coherent film wouldn't be easy, it was tough not to be intrigued with the involvement of rising director Emma Tammi - who helmed the terrific 2018 horror-Western The Wind.

This at least suggested that Blumhouse was taking the assignment seriously, but ultimately Five Nights at Freddy's was a dire adaptation that failed to spin the game's iconic survival horror stylings into a scary or even basically engaging film.

For a movie about murderous animatronic mascots to be this staggeringly dull is, frankly, a crime, unaided by an agonisingly overstretched 109-minute runtime.

Leads Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail are trying here, but beyond those feverishly obsessed with the central IP, this is a borderline-incoherent horror dud that was effortlessly outdone a few years prior by the similarly themed Nic Cage-starring joint Willy's Wonderland.
