Disney+: 10 Original Movies We Want To See

6. Sword In The Stone Live-Action Remake

For all the Arthurian legends make for great stories, it’s often been a poisoned chalice on the silver screen. Guy Ritchie and Charlie Hunnam found this out to their detriment recently, but Disney stumbled years ago too.

1963’s The Sword In The Stone has been somewhat forgotten, although there’s no clear reason as to why. It was warmly received at the time, features some great animation, and like a lot of Disney classics is a simple story told well.

A live-action remake could give it a shot in the arm, and wouldn’t carry that risk of a box office release; plus if wouldn’t require the expensive marketing a Disney movie usually requires.

Despite the plethora of Arthurian tales that have been told down the years, The Sword In The Stone still has a unique angle. With a heavy focus on Merlin and Madam Mim (not to mention Merlin’s owl), the movie goes in a more charming, fantastical direction instead of gritty sword set pieces.

A much younger Arthur forces them down a more family friendly direction too, but considering the likely limited budget of this hypothetical feature, that’s probably for the best too.
