Doctor Who: 10 Actors That Should Guest Star In Series 9

2. Philip Glenister

John Simm made waves as the Master, taking the role off the back of Life on Mars and winning the character lots of fans, even if others didn't quite take to his portrayal. It's a bit suprising, then, that his Life on Mars co-star Philip Glenister hasn't also made the jump into the Whoniverse yet, especially since Gene Hunt is arguably the most iconic character the series produced. That said, Glenister took a bit of a break from the BBC, working on Sky programmes like Mad Dogs and Treasure Island. However, he's recently returned to the Beeb to be a regular in Big School so it's entirely possible that he'd now be up for a guest stint in Who. He's an experienced actor so he'll be able to bring most characters he's given to life, though he'd be particularly thrilling as an antagonist for the Twelfth Doctor. However, actors from Life on Mars and its sequel, Ashes to Ashes, haven't got the best track record when it comes to moving to Who. Marshall Lancaster (The Almost People/The Rebel Flesh), Liz White (The Snowmen) and Keeley Hawes (Time Heist) all struggled to stand out, partly due to the underserved nature of their respective scripts. This could well happen with Glenister, too, although the potential reward from a clash between him and Capaldi would be well worth the risk.
