9. Sean Penn - The Gunman

Why The Actor Needed A 'Neeson': Sean Penn grew from a ridiculously talented young actor into one of the industry's most respected leading men. His career likely peaked with his Oscar-winning turn for Milk in 2008, yet soon he appeared to become highly disinterested in the industry and was more press-worthy due to his unintentional association with El Chapo's arrest.

Film In Question: Penn's move to attempt action star status was hardly a vital play to rejuvenate a fledging filmography. He just seemed bored with acting, so launching himself into a new challenge where he transformed into a chiselled and muscled specimen, seemed to reignite his interest.

Pierre Morel jumped onto the project to direct, which followed Penn's government assassin betrayed by his own organisation. He then, naturally, turns the tables on those who want him dead.

Did It Work?: Nope, it failed to ignite interest with critics or at the box office. This was despite several strong elements (director, cast), but the results were as pedestrian as the synopsis reads - and in spite of Penn's dedication physically, he turns in a strangely dull performance.
