Every Ben Affleck Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

9. The Way Back (2020)

Ben Affleck Gone Girl Batman v Superman Pearl Harbor

There's surely no more personal film in Affleck's filmography than The Way Back, where he played Jack Cunningham, an alcoholic construction worker recruited to become head coach of his former high school's basketball team.

Given Affleck's noted struggles with alcoholism in recent years there's a clearly lived-in, therapeutic quality to the role, and he absolutely rises to the challenge.

Affleck gives a mesmerising performance as this weathered, self-loathing middle-aged man desperately trying to piece his life back together against overpowering adversity.

Despite a few over-sentimental directorial touches, Affleck actually underplays the part quite brilliantly, ensuring there's no big Oscar-baiting breakdown sequence or drunken tirade. It's about the daily struggle involved in fixing one's life, one Affleck is surely all too familiar with.

In another timeline, had the film not released just as the pandemic annihilated the box office, his performance might've been in serious awards consideration.
