Every Bond Girl Ranked - Worst To Best
19. Severine (Skyfall, 2012)
Severine’s inclusion in the rankings occurs only due to Skyfall’s lack of the traditional Bond girl role; in some ways, M or even Moneypenny fit the definition better. Nonetheless, Severine is a character most fans are sure to remember when they think of Skyfall, as the doomed and tragic sacrificial lamb.
Severine doesn’t do much to advance the progress of women in Bond films as championed by Daniel Craig’s prior two films, her only real function being to build up the intimidation factor of Raoul Silva’s villain, who promptly executes her. Before that unfortunate event, however, there’s time for some usually-traditional romance with Bond - in a sequence that earned its fair share of outrage among viewers.
Introduced as a captive sex slave, Severine agrees to a clandestine meeting with Bond in her cabin, provided he can find some way to release her from the psychological captivity of the deranged Silva. What follows - as Bond surprises her in the shower by initiating some steamy sex - comes off, due to her status as a victim of sexual violence, as ickier and a few shades more exploitative than arguably ever before in the franchise.
She doesn’t have a whole lot to do, but in light of her significant role as a centrepiece of controversy in modern Bond history, it’s difficult to forget her.
Best moment: “What do you know about fear?” “All there is.” “Not like this. Not like him.” Dialogue like this in the trailers really helped to hype the film as high-stakes, yet eerily personal.
Worst moment: The aforementioned shower scene feels misguided at best, abusive at worst.
