My Left Foot director Jim Sheridan re-teams with DDL for this exceptional dramatisation of the 1974 Guildford pub bombings.

What could so easily have ended up a dull courtroom drama is instead a sharply character-driven affair, with Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite's Oscar-nominated performances especially lending some fierce emotional resonance. Emma Thompson is also sublime, and also Oscar-nominated, as a lawyer looking into Gerry Conlon's wrongful conviction.

This is a film where basically everything works, from the taut direction to the smart, affecting script and the firing-on-all-cylinders cast. Its seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, were very much deserved.
