Every DCEU Film Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Man Of Steel
Man of Steel is the definition of a mixed bag.
The film starts off very well with a soulful, well-edited and refreshingly quiet first half that focuses on the people in the story instead of action. This first half comes shockingly close to actually making Superman, who's always been a hard character to feel invested in since he's practically invulnerable, interesting.
Then, around the midway point, the film completely falls apart.
It devolves into a series of painfully overblown action sequences that don't have the slightest semblance of tension, and all the strong work of the first half is buried under the weight of those seemingly endless scenes of characters punching each other through walls.
As well as this, the film's romance is completely chemistry-free and Jonathan Kent's (Kevin Costner) death was just a bit dumb.
While Man of Steel certainly isn't a bad film, it still represents the DCEU at its most frustrating. It's given lift by the excellent cinematography and music, not to mention the solid cast, but the script needed quite a bit of work.
