Every DCEU Movie Ranked By Box Office Success

7. Shazam! - $365.9 Million

The Suicide Squad
Warner Bros.

When Shazam! was released in March 2019, it appeared to be the dawn of a new direction for the DCEU. Zachary Levi’s character and the movie named for him moved away from the dark tone of the beginnings of the SnyderVerse, and instead opted for more of an unmistakable Marvel-esque feel.

This clear change in direction that was more in line with what mainstream audiences expected from the MCU automatically sold tickets, however it still fell some way short of the numbers some of the previous entries in the franchise achieved.

The timing of the movie’s release may have had a large impact on its performance at the box office as it was up against not one, but two $1 billion MCU outings. Sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, Shazam! was always going to struggle to win over mainstream fans.

While these more casual cinema-goers were never likely to choose DC’s outing over either Marvel outing, some of the die-hard DC fans may have felt Shazam! betrayed the Snyder influence that made them fans of the franchise to begin with. This movie feels like it was between a rock and a hard place with its release, but at least it still managed to break even and make some profit.
