Every Evil Dead Movie Ranked Worst To Best

4. Army Of Darkness (1992)

Evil Dead
Universal Pictures

Many people will be upset at seeing Army of Darkness this low on the list, which is understandable. The movie is an absolute delight, with a big fan following, and some might even call it the most fun chapter in the franchise. But, that being said, it definitely feels the least Evil Dead out of all the flicks.

Army of Darkness follows on from Evil Dead II with the iconic Ash being transported into the past, landing in the Middle Ages. There's a lot to love about the film, with Bruce Campbell at his absolute campiest in his iconic role. The bizarre setting also makes way for plenty of surprising moments. For example, the scene where "Evil Ash" grows out of Ash's shoulder is a real highlight. Sadly, Army of Darkness ranks low simply because it feels out of place within the initial trilogy.

You have to respect Sam Raimi for taking a big risk in this film, and it certainly paid off if you want an enjoyable historical horror adventure. But Army of Darkness relies so heavily on comedy and fantasy that it lacks any of the scares the series had previously thrived on.

Goofiness is a big selling point for Ash and the Deadites, but it works best when it's balanced with pure horror.
