This second POTC film was so successful it was only the third billion-dollar movie, but reviews have been very mixed over the years. Looking at it now, it's pretty much the definition of a film that isn't as bad as you remember.

Filled with great action, memorable characters, fun jokes, delightfully hammy performances, strong direction from the ever-underrated Gore Verbinski and even cinema's greatest Kraken, this is definitely effective and well-executed as a spectacle. As well as this, the story is actually quite interesting and very bold for a Disney blockbuster.

Unfortunately, it is far too long and too horror-like for a family film. For example, there's an entirely pointless scene early on when a bird pecks out a prisoner's eye - a misjudged scene in a Disney film if there ever was one. There are several flaws that drag it down, but on the whole this is still a likable 7/10 movie and a worthy early member of the billion dollar club.
