Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Ranked Worst To Best

7. The Departed (2006)

Leonardo DiCaprio Shutter Island
Warner Bros.

Released mere months before Blood Diamond, The Departed offered audiences the first hint that DiCaprio was ready to embrace a new, mature image. However, there's still a lot of the old Leo in Scorsese's mob epic, which works massively in his favour.

Surrounded by an ensemble cast which also includes Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, DiCaprio emerges from the film as a true hero in a sea of villains. An undercover cop trapped in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, he soars as a man desperate to do the right thing, but frustratingly unable to catch a break.

Imbuing the role with intense uncertainty and desperation, DiCaprio is the troubled, heroic heart of Scorsese's excellent drama, which allows its stars to reach their full potential, but finds DiCaprio surpassing them all with anguish to spare.
